DIARRHEA/LOOSE MOTIONS IN CHILDREN

HAND SANITIZER CAN CAUSE POISONING IN CHILDREN.

HOW MUCH WATER DO CHILDREN NEED TO DRINK DAILY?

HOW TO PROTECT CHILDREN FROM THE ILL EFFECTS OF OVERUSE OF MOBILE PHONES

WHY CHILDREN SPEAK LIES ?

AUTISM

Autism is a developmental disability that affects communication, social interaction, and play skills. Autism affects about 1 in 88 people and it occurs approximately four times more in boys than in girls. It affects brain function and should be diagnosed by a medical professional. Although every child with autism is different, children with autism will usually have:

  • Trouble learning language as well as problems with communication, both spoken and non-spoken like eye contact, gestures, and pointing.
  • Problems with social skills, such as sharing emotions, understanding how people are feeling, expressing empathy or having a conversation.
  • Presence of unusual behaviours (e.g., hand flapping, rocking, biting), play that is repetitive and unusual and strong preference for sticking to a routine.

Individuals with autism may have trouble processing things they hear, see, smell, touch or taste. Also, autism is known as a spectrum disorder, meaning the severity and type of symptoms are different from person to person. Autism is an evolving disorder and your child’s symptoms and needs may change as they pass through different stages of development.
WHAT CAUSES AUTISM?
No one knows what causes autism. Though genetics play a role in the development of the disorder, there are many other factors that affect the onset and severity of autism. It is important for parents to realize that autism is NOT a result of something you did or did not do for your child.

HOW CAN I HELP A CHILD WITH AUTISM?

Early intervention is very effective in Autism and improves the long term outcomes.
Intervention options:
Developmentally-based techniques encourage therapists and parents to work with the child’s own interests or actions to slowly build engagement, interaction, and communication. Often play activities are used rather than more directive methods to help children learn. Recent research has shown these approaches to be very effective for children with autism.
Applied Behavioural Analysis (ABA) – based techniques focus on the child’s interests and motivation to learn new, more adaptive behaviours. They are based on the principles of reward and reinforcement for appropriate behaviours.

Occupational therapy helps children develop appropriate social, play, and learning skills. The therapist aids the child in achieving normal daily tasks (e.g., getting dressed and playing with other children). Occupational therapists may use aspects of sensory integration therapy in order to help the child appropriately respond to and organize information coming through the senses.
Speech and language therapy is often beneficial for children with autism since about 30-50% of them do not use speech. Conventional methods of speech therapy are not always effective. The therapist should have a good understanding of autism and be able to emphasize non-verbal communication, like pictures and gestures if necessary. For children who speak, a speech & language therapist helps them by enabling them to use their language for social interaction and play. The latter is often found to be challenging for children who are verbal.
When choosing an intervention plan, educate yourself on the options which have been scientifically tested and shown to be effective for managing autism symptoms. Be aware that there are prevalent therapies that lack evidence supporting their use with autism. The best intervention plans are those which incorporate aspects of all of the aforementioned therapies as per the child’s needs and abilities.
The earlier the intervention is implemented, the better the outcome for your child. Research also shows that children whose parents are very involved in various aspects of their intervention are more likely to make progress. As parents, you too will have to learn and use strategies that can help your child progress.

CAN A CHILD WITH AUTISM DO WELL AT SCHOOL?

Children with autism present with a whole range of intellectual abilities. Some may have higher than normal IQ, while others qualify for a diagnosis of mental retardation. Their skills may be stronger in some areas (memory, math, music) and weaker in others (speech, self-care). Regardless of their abilities, it is important for children with autism to attend school because it provides a structured environment with clearly laid out expectations as well as opportunities for interacting with children of their age. Attending school is greatly beneficial to their development.
Seek the guidance of professionals to help you decide the best type of school for your child. Options include a regular school, an inclusive school (most children are typical, but the school will admit students with special needs), and special schools (meant specifically for children with disabilities).

WHAT SHOULD I DO TO COPE AS A PARENT OF A CHILD WITH AUTISM?

Learn More: Learning your child has autism can be a very trying time for a parent. Consulting with other parents of children with autism and joining a support group is a great way to learn about the disorder and how to deal with the daily challenges of having a child with autism. It is important for you as a parent to educate yourself about autism so you can become an advocate for your child. Talk to your extended family and share the child’s diagnoses with them. Family members can become your greatest source of support.
Seek Proper Guidance: Seek the guidance of and collaborate with medical professionals like a Developmental pediatrician or Pediatric neurologist and therapists to devise an intervention program for your child. It is especially important that you learn and continue simple, therapeutic strategies at home (e.g. play-based techniques) since the therapist cannot be present at all times. These will help your child function better. You know the most about your child and will be the best therapist they can have.
Remember to Take care of yourself: You must also be mindful of your own well-being. It can be overwhelming to constantly care for and advocate for your child. Make time to do activities that you enjoy (e.g., yoga, going out to dinner or a movie with other adults, etc.). It is also important for both parents to be involved in caring for the child, so that both of you know what to do and can give each other an occasional break

TIPS ON COMMUNICATING WITH A CHILD WITH AUTISM
  • When speaking to your child, come to their level so you are not talking down to them.
  • Use short sentences and constantly comment on what you or your child is doing to continually expose them to language.
  • Avoid repeatedly asking questions as this can be difficult and frustrating for your child.
  • For children who have trouble with speech and language, encourage the use of visual aids, such as PECS and picture schedules, for communication.
  • Using signs is also an excellent option for some children with autism.
  • Children with autism are often better at visual and detail-oriented tasks such as puzzles, for example. It is important to encourage their strengths and provide them with outlets for their interests and hobbies.

“With love, early intervention and education, people with autism can and do lead happy productive lives and can be integrated into society. The problem is that society is not always tolerant of persons who are different. It is up to us as parents and professionals to educate society and help them understand and appreciate these very special people challenged by autism.”

CEREBRAL PALSY (CP)

Cerebral Palsy (CP) is a disability that affects movement.

WHAT CAUSES CP?

It is caused by injury to the part of the brain that affects movement. The injury usually happens when the brain is growing rapidly during pregnancy, birth or the first few years of life. A number of causes can result in Cerebral Palsy including infections during pregnancy, birth injury, being born premature, serious infection in a baby or accidents that injure the brain.

HOW DO I KNOW THAT A CHILD COULD HAVE CP?

The most common feature in cerebral palsy is spasticity (tight, stiff muscle tone) though some kids with CP may have very loose muscles. Your child might also have trouble with hearing and vision. Difficulties with speech are common, and seizures may occur.

HOW DO I GET A DIAGNOSIS FOR CP?

Most instances of CP can be identified by the age of 2, although it’s occasionally possible to identify as early as a few months. A pediatrician or doctor can diagnose CP. Your doctor can also tell you which type of CP your child has.

HOW DO I GET HELP FOR A CHILD WITH CP?

Although some people with CP have an intellectual disability, some are extremely bright. Educating your child will always help her develop. When you first learn your child has a disability, you may feel very afraid, angry, and alone. These reactions are natural. Give yourself time to adjust to this new reality. It is not your fault.
Disability happens everywhere and to anyone: 1 in 10 people have a disability.
Every parent wants to see their child do well. With the right tools and approach, you can increase your child’s potential. There are numerous resources available, especially in the form of other parents who understand what you’re going through.

“You are your child’s greatest strength. The most important thing to remember is that tailored education, physical therapy plans and plenty of encouragement from you will help your child reach her full potential.”

DOWN SYNDROM (DS)

WHAT IS DOWN SYNDROME?

Down syndrome (Trisomy 21) is a disorder in which a person has an extra 21st chromosome. One in every eight hundred children has Down syndrome. Children with Down syndrome experience delays in physical and intellectual development. Their average height is often less than other children of their age. They might have a lower than average thinking ability, poor muscle tone, and joint weakness. They often crawl, stand, and walk later than many other children of their age. Just like other children, they will look like you or other members of your family. However, in addition, children with Down syndrome often have slanted eyes, a flat nose, and a small chin. They may also have a tongue that appears to stick out, a single line in their palm, and an extra space between their first and second toe. Children with the Syndrome are known to be very happy, loving, and playful. Although Down syndrome is an extra challenge that your child may have, it is important to remember that still like other children, he/she has his/her own strengths. Down syndrome cannot be cured. However, many children with Down syndrome go on to learn how to be independent in many life skills. Our job, as parents and caregivers, is to provide them with the support to do exactly that.

WHAT CAUSES DOWN SYNDROME?

Down syndrome is a genetic condition – this means it is something your child is born with. It is s chromosomal condition. Chromosomes are present in all cells of your body. While the normal chromosome number in all of us is 46 (23 pairs), people with Down syndrome have 47 (an extra 21st chromosome), so nothing you did or did not do as parents caused this condition. Certain blood tests done during pregnancy (Triple Marker Test) can help your doctor to suspect Down syndrome. However, it is not 100% accurate. The risks of having a baby with Down syndrome increase with the mother’s age. About 75% of children with Down syndrome, however, are born to young mothers.

WHAT KIND OF THERAPY DOES MY CHILD NEED?

Although Down syndrome cannot be cured, the child with Down syndrome can make good progress in all areas of development with good therapy and support from you. Therapies often include Speech Therapy, Physiotherapy, Occupational Therapy, Special education, and special attention in school.
Speech Therapy: Children with Down syndrome often speak late. When they start speaking, they often seem to understand more than what they are able to express (expressive speech delays). They may also have difficulties in clarity. A speech therapist will help your child to communicate clearly and speak more fluently. Therapists often teach additional ways like signs to children with Down syndrome to help them communicate.
Physiotherapy: Children with Down syndrome have hypotonia, which means that their muscle tone is less, making them appear loose or floppy. . This affects the ability of children with Down syndrome to support themselves and acquire motor skills like crawling, standing and walking. In physiotherapy, the emphasis is on overcoming weakness and learning gross motor skills.
Occupational Therapy: An occupational therapist will help your child develop basic skills needed for daily living such as holding a toothbrush, getting dressed, feeding, etc. In addition, they help children with working on developing fine motor and visuo-perceptual skills like those needed for playing, reading and writing. Ask your child’s doctor about what kind of treatments will help your child the most. Playing with your child can be very effective therapy as well! Choosing the right therapist – Pick a therapist who is willing to help you work with your child at home. Remember, you are your child’s best therapist because you know her the best. Ask your child’s therapist to teach you strategies that you can use in your own home to help your child. A good therapist will recognize that children learn best through play, and your child should enjoy the therapy.

WHAT OTHER HEALTH PROBLEMS CAN DOWN SYNDROME CAUSE?

Children with Down syndrome are more likely to have certain health problems. When your child is first diagnosed with Down syndrome the doctor may ask you to get some tests done to look for heart problems, thyroid problems, hearing loss and vision problems. Some tests such as the blood tests for thyroid problems may need to be done on a yearly basis. Check in with your doctor regularly. Children with Down syndrome can have problems such as low weight and poor height when they are young. They are more likely to develop obesity when they are older. However, if you make sure your child is active and eats healthy food, this can be prevented. Children with Down syndrome may also be prone to problems like constipation, and allergies, both of which can be easily treated.

WHAT KIND OF SCHOOL CAN MY CHILD ATTEND?

Choosing the right school depends on your child’s skills, strengths, and level of need. There are two types of schools that your child can attend: regular, inclusive school (school is supportive of children with varying needs) or special school (school specifically for special needs children). Both have their pluses and minuses, but children with DS are often able to learn well in an inclusive school. Availability of an inclusive school is often a problem in India. As children with Down syndrome often have intellectual limitations, direct instruction in short periods of time along with smaller chunks of activities will help to support learning. It will help to introduce new material slowly, sequentially and in a step-by-step fashion. Encouraging your child by praising and rewarding his efforts is the best way to get her to learn.

HOW CAN I HELP MY CHILD?

Helping your child grow up feeling positive about herself is the most important thing that you can do as a parent to help your child. Playing and interacting with your baby, and encouraging everyone in the family to do the same, will help develop her mind and body. The most important thing to do is to make your baby feel that she has a loving family.
Sometimes the demands of your child’s medical or developmental needs may be overwhelming. It is important that you and your spouse take care of yourself. Parental depression can be a major hurdle in the development of a child. Talking to other families and making sure you take time of to do things for yourself are very important. Seek support from your family and friends. If you feel you need professional support do not hesitate to ask your doctor for a referral to a counselor or mental health professional.

LEARNING DISABILITIES (DYSLEXIA)

Problems with speaking, reading, writing, spelling and doing maths could be caused by Learning Disabilities (LD). LD can affect school performance even in children with normal or even above-average intelligence. However, with the right approach and support children with LD can easily cope, even excel in school.

WHAT ARE LEARNING DISABILITIES (LD)?

Learning Disabilities affect a child’s ability to learn, retain and process information. As a result of LD, some children find it difficult to listen, speak, read, write and do math. They find it difficult to understand and absorb information taught in traditional school formats. Typically children with LD are of normal and even above-average intelligence. However, they don’t do well with school skills and academic performance, despite their normal intelligence. Generally, there is also quite an obvious difference between their oral and written work, with the latter being quite poor.

There are several kinds of Learning Disabilities. They include:

Dyslexia: Difficulty with reading and spelling. Example: Confuses and reverses letters/letter order in words (e.g. d/b, p/q, was/saw) and has trouble reading.

Dyscalculia: Difficulty with math’s. Example: Confuses between signs (+, -, x and /), difficulty understanding and doing word problems.

Dysgraphia: Difficulty writing and forming letters. Example: Writing may be slow, laboured or illegible; inconsistent and poor spelling.

Children with LD do not have primary sensory problems such as mental retardation, emotional disturbance, or motor handicap.

WHAT CAUSES LD?

The causes of LD appear to be genetic. Some forms of LD like dyslexia could be caused by head injury or trauma (not very common though). Some children with dyslexia appear to process (make sense of) information using a different area of the brain than children without a learning disability.

HOW DO I KNOW THAT A CHILD HAS A LEARNING DISABILITY?

Children with LD are usually of normal intelligence and hard-working. They do well in most non-classroom activities. Thus LD sometimes goes unnoticed for a long time. School teachers, parents can care givers can observe some early warning signs. If these signs are consistent, they should refer the child to a health professional for evaluation.

EARLY WARNING SIGNS – PRESCHOOL
  • Late talking.
  • Pronunciation problems.
  • Slow vocabulary Growth; child often unable to find the right word.
  • Difficulty rhyming words.
  • Trouble learning numbers, the alphabet, days of the week.
  • Likes listening to stories but shows no interest in letters of numbers.
  • Poor ability to follow directions or routines.
  • Left-right confusion.
EARLY WARNING SIGNS – CLASS 1-4
  • Puzzling gap between intelligence and written language performance.
  • Difficulty in associating letters with sounds.
  • Confuses basic words (run, eat, want).
  • Makes consistent reading and spelling errors. These include reversal of letters (b/d, dig for big) or words (tac for cat); inversions (m/w); transpositions (felt/left); and substitutions (house/home).
  • Transposes number sequences and confuses arithmetic signs (+, -, x, /).
  • Slow to learn new skills and difficulty in retaining material already learnt.
  • Difficulty in copying letters/words from the black board.
  • Difficulty in understanding what they hear.
  • Difficulty in planning and organizing writing tasks.
  • Awkward fine motor skills (difficulty holding pen/pencil).
  • Behavioral problems and or dislike for reading.

(Please note: The above is not an all inclusive list of signs and symptoms of LD/dyslexia. Use this list as a general guideline only, not as a basis for diagnosis.)

If a child exhibits a number of these signs, you should refer the child to a special educator or a pediatrician to coordinate a full evaluation. This evaluation will tell you the kind of LD that the child has and his/her learning style. Based on this information, suitable steps can be taken to help the child become a better learner. Is the child an auditory learner, meaning that s/he learns best by hearing information? Is the child a tactile learner, meaning that s/he learns best by touch or “hands-on”? Finally, is the child a visual learner, meaning that s/he learns best by seeing information? Using the child’s learning style when presenting new information may be beneficial to the child with LD.

HOW DO I GET THE CHILD EVALUATED FOR LD?

A pediatrician or school can refer you to an appropriate source to assess the type of LD and identify the child’s learning style. Various professionals can help your child manage their Learning disability. A special educator, etc… The process will usually involve assessing the child’s intelligence usually using and IQ score, for very young children may not do this. Next assessment will involve a special educator, who looks at your child’s academic performance and how she processes information. For children at risk it may not be necessary to do a full assessment before starting intervention.

WHAT CAN I DO TO HELP THE CHILD?

Observing the child or having him/her evaluated will help you understand the individual learning style – so you will be able to reinforce school skill in a manner more suitable to the child. If there is special educator in the community, find a teacher who will works will help you with a programme of management. In addition to this, some putting some basic systems in place will help the child to focus and learn better.

Some things you could do in addition to the specific strategies that your special educators recommend:

  • Set up your child’s homework area according to his learning style – can he work with noise (music/tv/conversation) around? Or does he need absolute silence. Does he need to have people around, or does he need to work in solitude. Based on this observation you could set up a home work spot – it could be the child’s bedroom, the kitchen table or the dining table.
  • Schedule the child’s work into short installments – 10-15 minutes/half-hour or depending on the child’s attention span. And schedule a break between installments.
  • Consider a star chart to any other reward system that could, for example, let him earn points towards a chosen reward (remember, rewards are most enticing when your child has selected them himself!).
  • Help them organize their work, time and space. This is very important.
  • Help the child organize their workplace. Some children are ‘pilers’ – they like to organize things in stacks, yet know where everything is. Some children work horizontally (spreading out items). Work with your child and help him organize her workplace in a way that makes sense to him.
  • If your has difficulties finding things, teach him how to organize his belongings. Explain that that there is a place for everything, and everything should be put away when its not in use.
  • Assign colours to your children’s school subjects and provide a notebook and folder in each subject’s colour to help her collect what’s needed to complete her homework.
  • For writing work, discuss the work and make the child write down key points before they start writing.
  • Set small achievable learning goals.

Find your child’s strengths in and out of the classroom, celebrate them and teach your child to use these strengths to his best advantage. Educate yourself about the learning disability from credible certified sources. And above all be in constant touch with the child’s teacher to understand if the learning strategies are successful.

HELPING A CHILD WHO STUTTERS

  • Speak with your child in an unhurried way, pausing frequently. At the same time, try not to sound unnatural. Wait a few seconds after your child finishes speaking before you begin to speak. Your own slow, relaxed speech will be far more effective than any criticism or advice such as “slow down” or “try it again slowly.” Such simplistic advice can be felt as demeaning and is not helpful.
  • Try to decrease criticisms, rapid speech patterns, interruptions and questions. Children speak more freely if they are expressing their own ideas rather than answering an adult’s questions. Instead of asking questions, simply comment on what your child has said, thereby letting him know that you heard him.
  • You may be tempted to finish sentences or fill in words. Try not to.
  • Maintain natural eye contact and wait patiently and naturally until he/she is finished.
  • Give your complete undivided attention to your child at specific pre-decided times in the day. During this time, let the child choose what he would like to do. Let him direct you in activities and decide himself whether to talk or not. When you talk during this special time, use slow, calm and relaxed speech with plenty of pause. This quiet, calm time can be a confidence-builder for younger children, letting them know that their parent enjoys their company. As the child gets older, it can be a time when the child feels comfortable talking about his feelings and experiences with a parent.
  • Observe the way you interact with your child. Try to increase those times that give your child the message that you are listening to what she says rather than how she says it, and give her plenty of time to talk.
  • Help all members of the family learn to take turns talking and listening. Children, especially those who stutter, find it much easier to talk when there are few interruptions and they have the listeners’ attention.
  • Be aware that those who stutter usually have more trouble controlling their speech on the telephone. Please be patient in this situation. If you pick up the phone and hear nothing, be sure that it is not a person who stutters trying to start a conversation before you hang up.
  • Above all, convey that you accept your child as he is. The most powerful force will be your support of him, whether he stutters or not.

ADOPTION

Adoption means a legal process that allows someone to become the parent of a child, even though the parent and child are not related by blood. But in every other  way, adoptive parents are the child’s parents.

Meaning of Adoption ?

Adoption is the act of taking something on as our own and legally accepting another’s child.

Why it is better/desirable to adopt a child through the Child Welfare Institute?

Adopting a child is an emotional decision, however it needs the legal support. The trained social workers of Child welfare Institutions give support and help to complete the legal formalities.

Is it necessary for both the parents to desire a baby through  adoption?

Yes/True,because the childs upbringing  and welfare is the responsibility of both the  parents since the adopted child is going to be a  part of their family.

Criteria for parents to be eligible to adopt a child.

In India,an Indian,Non Residential Indian or a foreign citizen may adopt a child. If the parents fulfill the any one of following criteria they become eligible to adopt a child.

  1. Parents who are unable to have a child.
  2. They should be medically fit.
  3. Parents who already have children naturally born of them
  4. Both of them  must be 21 year old.
  5. They should be financially sound to take  care of the  child.
How do you recognize a child who needs you?

Children of all ages, cultures, religious and ethinic backgrounds may need a family for  life through adoption.Unlike other children the child is without parent and has nobody to shower love and affection upon him.

Requirements for adoption:

Following documents of parents  must be submitted along with the petition for adoption:

  1. Birth certificates
  2. Marriage certificates
  3. Medical /fitness certificates .
  4. A medical certificate of  a Gynecologist in case of a childless parents.
  5. Five postcard photographs of parents together.
  6. Five references from people who would vouch for the character of parents.
  7. Property declaration certificate.
  8. Income certificates.
  9. Certificate of saving/deposit with reference letter from banks.
Home Study Reports:

A major step in building your family through adoption is the home study.once you finalise the decision of adoption the social workers visit your home and take group and individual interviews of your family members to clear their doubts.

Selection of Baby:

Selection of a baby is also an important part of adoption.Parents should explain their ideas to social workers so that they would show them the baby which will fit their description.Usually three babies of their description would be shown.Parents should observe one baby at a time to avoid confusion at the time of selection.Parents will be informed about the health of the child but the information about the child’s natural parents will not be revealed.During this process the advice of a child specialist of your choice should be solicited.

What are the laws governing adoption?

Indian citizens who are Hindus, Jains, Sikhs, or Buddhists are allowed to formally adopt a child. The adoption is under the Hindu Adoption and Maintenance Act of 1956. Under this act, a single parent or married couple are not permitted to adopt more than one child of the same sex. Foreign citizens, NRIs, and those Indian nationals who are Muslims, Parsis, Christians or Jews are subject to the Guardian and Wards Act of 1890. Under this act, the adoptive parent is only the guardian of the child until she reaches 18 years of age.

Foreign citizens and NRIs are supposed to formally adopt their child according to the adoption laws and procedures in the country of their residence. This must be carried out within two years of the individual becoming a child's guardian. There is also a Juvenile Justice Act of 2000, a part of which deals with adoption of children by non-Hindu parents. However, this act is applicable only to children who have been abandoned or abused and not to those children who have been voluntarily put up for adoption.

Follow up procedure after adoption:

Once everthing is  finalized and child goes to live with the parents a special relationship needs to be developed between the child and parents. The social worker visits the family from  time to time to help solve any problems and give timely advice and guidance. This follow up is carried out for three years according to Hindu Adoption act and for five years by the guardian and Wards Act.

What is the expenditure?

Child welfare Organisations are run on a no-profit,no-loss basis. But the basic expenses incurred by the organization to raise the child, service charges ,child care fee, legal fee need to be paid.

How can you help?
  1. Parents ,Engineers,Advocates,Lecturer,Doctors,Politicians,Businessmen,Journalist and writers can help in getting home for the orphans.
  2. By giving publicity to the issues of adoption through personal contacts, articles in newspapers and magazines, thus helping to create awareness and an environment conductive for adoption in society.
  3. By giving donation in cash or in kind to organization.
  4. By making efforts to grant maternity leave for adoptive mothers from their work place.
  5. By giving information about interested parents to social workers.

EMOTIONAL INTELLIGENCE (EI)

Emotional Intelligence is the capability of individuals to recognise their own ,and other peoples emotions. It can be measured on a scale and given a numeric value which is known as Emotional Quotient(EQ).
Academic or cognitive intelligence(IQ) offers little prepration for the emotional challenges that a child will meet in the course of life. In fact statistics has proven that trend of lower EQ is seen in a majority of kids the world over.

Some common Misconception about Emotional Intelligence

These days Emotional Intelligence is revolution in Psychology and human development.A number of misunderstanding have arisen about Emotional Intelligence, which need to be explored and cleared.

Myth 1:Rationality is important, facts are more solid and useful.Hence emotions and the related emotional intelligence have no place in our life.

Reality : Emotions form an important survival system of our body.Emotions tell us about on our needs, influence our effective functioning and shape our dicisions. They give us important information about what is really happening in and around us and helps us make necessary changes.By focusing on emotions,we can actually deal with facts more easily and effectively.

Myth 2:Focussing on emotions takes time; I am too busy to find out what others are feeling.

Reality :Emotions help us to connect with our self and others. If one doesn’t focus on what one and others are feeling one may spend a longer time doing wrong things and less effective.

Myth 3:Emotional Intelligence is just a fancy psychology term or putting a old wine in new bottle. It has nothing new to offer.

Reality : Emotional Intelligence is an important set of skills and abilities required to survive effectively as a human being. These skills influence what and how we teach children in schools, how we live day-to-day in families and how we function in organizations. There have neuro-scientific studies and ground breaking brain research done all over the world in last decade, which has given important insights into the concept of EQ and its credibility.

Myth 4: Emotional Intelligence is a touchy-feely concept that require lot of expression and telling other how you feel. That would embarrass people and break relationships.

Reality : Emotional Intelligence more often than not involves, expressing and managing emotions effectively. So being more emotionally intelligent does not necessarily involve telling everyone how you feel but gives one an advantage to appropriately communicate one’s needs.

Myth 5:My feelings are invisible to others and I can hide them .So I don’t need these skills of : Emotional Intelligence.

Reality : This is a great ignorance.people can perceive our emotions from our body language, especially when they do not match our words. It’s more damaging to the body-mind if you hide or suppress your emotions.

Scientific Definition

“Emotional intelligens is the ability to perceive emotions ;to access and generate emotions so as to assist thought; to understand emotion and emotional knowledge; and to reflectively regulate emotions so as to promote emotional and intellectual Growth.”

What does Emotional Intelligence in a child Imply?

PARENTING TIPS

Important tips for parents

(1)Protect your child from passive smoking
  • Passive smoking is breathing in other people’s tobacco smoke, which harms your health.
  • When you or others smoke anywhere in your home, your child smokes passively the same as smoking 60-150 cigarettes per year.
  • Children who live in a smoky home have greater risk of…
  1. Admitted in Clinic
  2. Asthama attack and chest infection
  3. Coughs and colds
  4. Being absent from school
  5. Taking up smoking themselves
(2)Burns and Scalds

Run cold water over the burnt area at once.Keep water running for five minutes.Do not take off your child’s clothes-Run the water over the clothes over the burnt area.Call your doctor or take your child to the Clinic if the burn is serious.

(3) Constipation

Constipation is infrequent bowel actions with hard stools that are difficult to pass and are causing distress.Young babies often strain when they pass their stools; As long as their stools are soft this is quiet normal.

Breastfed babies may pass a stool after each feed;but by the age of four to six weeks they will develop their own pattern. This can vary from several times a day to less than once a week.If you are breastfeeding and are worried your baby may be constipated contact your health advisor/doctor for advise.

(4) Reduce the risk of sudden infant death
  • The safest place for your baby to sleep is on their back in a cot or a crib in theroom with you for the first six months.
  • Place your baby in the ‘feet to foot’ position (with their feet at the end of the cot )
  • Keep your baby’s head uncovered.Their blanket should be tucked in no higher than their shoulder.
  • Don’t smoke in pregnancy –fathers too! And don’t let anyone smoke in the same room.
  • Never sleep with your baby on a sofa or armchair.
  • Do not share a bed with your baby if:
  1. you have been drinking alcohol
  2. you have taken medication or drugs that make you sleep more heavily
  3. you are very tired
  4. you or your partner is a smoker
  5. your babies was born premature (before 37 weeks)
  6. your baby was low birth weight(less than 2.5 kgs or 5 lbs)
(5) Fevers

If you think your child has fever, watch out for other signs of illness and contact your doctor if you are worried.A febrile child needs plenty to drink, may not want food and may want more sleep.Keep your child cool by taking off clothing and bedding, and give paracetamol and plenty to drink.
Do not sponge your child with cool water as this is uncomfortable and causes shivering that may only keep the heat in. Do not add more clothes or bedding, this can be dangerous.

(6)Fits or convulsions
  • A child who is having a fit needs to be in a safe place, such as on a floor.
  • Lie the child on its tummy with its head turned to one side.
  • Do not put anything into the child’s mouth.Get help.
  • Fits may sometimes happen when your child has a high temperature.
(7) Tummy upsets

Tummy upsets are not often serious. But small babies can get short of water(dehydrated)if not treated properly.
Diarrhoea:If your baby or young child has more than five loose or watery stools in 24 hours:

  • Continue to give food/milk in the normal way
  • For every watery stool give an extra drink of cool boiled water or rehydration fluid
  • Diarrhoea should get better by 10 days
  • If Diarrhoea lasts longer or your baby is otherwise unwell get medical help
(8)Vomiting

If your baby is not usually sick…

  • Stop food for 3-4 hours
  • Give small amounts of cooled boiled water.
  • When vomiting stops give usual milk or food in small amount to begin with
  • If breastfeeding,do not stop feeding

IRON DEFICIENCY ANEMIA

What is Anemia?

Anemia is a condition in which the blood doesn’t have enough healthy red blood cells or number of red blood cells (RBC), and accordingly their oxygen carrying capacity,is inadequate to meet the body’s physiological needs. The function of RBCs is to deliver oxygen from the lungs to the tissues and carbon dioxide from the tissues to the lungs. This is accomplished by using hemoglobin (Hb), a tetramer protein composed heam and globin.Anemia impairs the body’s ability of gas exchange by decreasing the number of RBCs transporting oxygen and carbon dioxide.Anemia results from one or more of the following processes:defective red cell production, increased red cell destruction or blood loss.Iron is necessary for synthesis of hemoglobin.Iron deficiency is thought to be the most common cause of anemia globally, but other nutritional deficiencies(including folate,Vitamin B12 and Vitamin A),acute and chronic inflammation, parasitic infection, and inherited disorders that affect Hb synthesis, red blood cell production or red blood cell survival can all cause anemia.Iron deficiency anemia results in impaired cognitive and motor development in children and decreased work capacity in adults.

The effects are most severe in infancy and early childhood. In pregnancy, iron deficiency anemia can lead to perinatal loss, prematurity and low birth weight (LBW) babies.Iron deficiency anemia also adversely affects the body’s immune response.

Etiology of Anemia

The most commonest causes of anemia in developing countries, particularly among the most vulnerable groups (pregnant women and preschool age children), are nutritional disorders and infections.Hence the causes of anemia could be segregated as nutritional and non-nutritional,underscoring the etiological importance of dietary deficiency as the major causative factor.

Iron deficiency

Iron status can be considered as a continum from iron deficiency with anemia,to iron deficiency with no anemia,to normal iron status with varying amounts of stored iron, and finally to iron overload, which can cause organ damage when severe.Iron deficiency is the result of long term negative iron balance.Iron deficiency anemia (IDA) should be regarded as a subset of iron deficiency ,that is,it represents the extreme lower end of the distribution of iron deficiency.

Impact of Anemia on Health Outcomes

Anemia has major consequences on human health as well as social and economic development. Anemia is the world’s second leading cause of disability and is responsible for about I million deaths a year,of which three quarters occur in Africa and South-East Asia.

In young children, iron deficiency is due to increased iron requirement during periods of rapid Growth, which are almost 10 times higher per kilogram of body weight than that of an adult male.In addition, infants and toddler diets are often poor in bio-available iron.

Prevention and Treatment

Anemia is a multi-factoral disorder that requires a multi-pronged approach for its prevention and treatment.Prevention of both iron deficiency and anemia require approaches that address all the potential causasive factors.Intervention to prevent and correct iron deficiency and IDA,therefore, must include measures to increase iron intake through food-based approaches, namely dietary diversification and food fortification with iron; iron supplementation and improved health services and sanitation.

Diet Diversification,Food Fortification and Supplementation

Dietry diversification is encouraging the consumption of micronutrients rich food-dark green leafy egetables, lentils and vitamin C rich fruits.

Food fortification is the addition of key vitamin and minerals(e.g.iron,folic acid iodine, vitamin A and zinc)to staple foods to improve their nutritional content and address a nutritional gap in population.

Food supplements are highly concentrated vitamins and minerals produced by pharmaceutical manufactures in the form of capsules, tablets or injections and administrated as part of health care or specific nutritions campaigns.

ADULT VACCINATIONS

Let me begin with a confession that it is embarrassing for a pediatrician to write about ‘‘Adult’’ vaccinations. But I suppose, you all will agree that vaccination is a topic predominantly in the domain of pediatrics and hence this venture! Here I wish to give youjust a flavor of the topic rather than a comprehensive write up.

Adult vaccination is an incredibly important but hugely neglected, underrated and under publicized topic, more so in India. The uptake of adult vaccinations is worryingly low.

When was the last time you encountered adult vaccination? Probably an international traveler or a pregnant woman. In an era when we are so particular about childhood vaccinations, we should be perturbed by miserably poor coverage of vaccinations in adults.

Many of us invest good amount of effort, time and money on healthy eating and exercising as a means to keeping ourselves healthy and fit but fail to visualize vaccinationas a tool for achieving the same goal. In fact, vaccination is the simplest, most effective and least expensive modality of preventive healthcare for adults. Vaccines are the most impactful medical innovation of the twentieth century. Let us clear the fog around this topic by answering five questions.

HOW IMPORTANT IS ADULT VACCINATIONS?

Vaccination of adults is an important tool for preventing various infectious and non-
infectious diseases: -

  1. Vaccine preventable diseases (VPD): Vaccines as we all know protects us from VPD like pneumonia (caused by  influenza virus including swine flu, pneumococcus etc.), hepatitis (A & B), CNS infections (meningitis, encephalitis) and so on. There are few diseases, initially thought to occur only in children, which are now a days seen with increased frequency in adults like pertussis, diphtheria and chickenpox and for all of these effective vaccines are available. Apart from escaping the morbidity andmortality of these diseases, adults save on loss of work days, cost incurred in treatment and likelihood of spreading it to near and dear ones in family and friends. Spread of infection to children and older people can be catastrophic at times.
  2. Non-communicable diseases (NCD): Vaccines also have an important bearing on NCD like ischemic heart disease (IHD) and stroke. NCD have two-way relationship with VPD. Patients with NCD have higher risk of complications and death when they get VPD and VPD increase the risk of getting ischemic heart disease and stroke. VPD have pro inflammatory and pro coagulant effects which are responsible for vascular complications seen with it. Risk of getting IHD and stroke are less in vaccinated people as compared to non-vaccinated.
  3. Cancers: Vaccines also protect from various cancers like liver, oral, penile, anal and
    cervical cancers.

Thus, as can be noted that apart from common knowledge of prevention of VPD,
vaccination have an additional benefit in regards to NCD and cancers. Looks like buy one,
get two free!

WHY ADULT VACCINATION IS SUCH A NEGLECTED ISSUE?

I will walk you through some factors which can explain as to why adult vaccination is not
so popular amongst doctors and patients alike: -

  1. Lack of awareness and low prioritization of adult immunization.
  2. Lack of Universal program of immunization (UPI): unlike in children, Government of India has no UPI for adults.
  3. Fear of injections (Believe me!).
  4. Misconceptions: People are skeptical of vaccine efficacy and side effects in spite of the fact that vaccines are generally safe and effective. Various myths, like vaccines weakens Immunity system, people with good Immunity don’t need vaccines and adults who did take vaccines in childhood don’t need them when they get old, are detrimental to vaccine uptake rates of population.
  5. Regulatory and professional apathy towards immunization of adults.

WHICH ADULTS NEEDS VACCINATIONS?

  1. All healthy adults need vaccinations.
  2. High Risk population: people with comorbidities & chronic diseases like heart diseases, lung diseases (Asthma , COPD), diabetes, liver disease, kidney disease, obesity, age more than 65 years, healthcare workers, lack of previous vaccination, immunocompromised states and alcoholism have higher risk of complications and death from VPD. Also VPD can lead to decompensation of their primary illness. For them getting vaccinated is all the more important.
  3. Pregnancy: vaccination of pregnant women not only protects mother but also the baby. Every pregnant woman should receive Flu and Tdap vaccines.
  4. International travelers: as per schedule and requirements of individual countries.

WHAT IS THE ROLE OF ADULT VACCINATION IN CORONA PANDEMIC?

Adult vaccination is important at all times but present pandemic has reignited our interest in this topic. Pandemic had some negative impact even on childhood vaccinations due to supply chain disruptions, population movement restrictions and reduced availability of healthcare professionals. All vaccines should be regularly given to adults as per recommendations during pandemic. Coinfection with other viruses and bacteria can increase morbidity and mortality of COVID-19 patients and vaccines have significant role to play in preventing these coinfections. Some studies have documented coinfection rates of 30-50% in COVID 19 patients.

WHICH VACCINES ARE TO BE GIVEN TO ADULTS?

Various vaccines recommended for adults are influenza, Tdap, pneumococcal, MMR, Hepatitis A & B, Typhoid, Chickenpox, meningococcal, Human papilloma virus vaccines etc. Herpes zoster vaccine is also important for adults but presently not available in India. Recommendation from various Indian and international medical bodies, number of doses, vaccine schedule is depicted in the following table.

There is an urgent need to sensitize policy makers, professionals and population at large about adult vaccination. To make it long term, sustainable and impactful, we need to integrate immunization of adults into our concept of healthy living and healthy ageing. I wish we all take up adult vaccination with the seriousness it deserves and make it an indispensable part of preventive healthcare of adults, though this subject is likely to excite a sense of urgency among the converted and skepticism among the dubious.

Parental Guidance on Baby Massage

  Dr Narendra Rathi,

MD, DNB, FIAP

Senior Paediatrician

Smile Children Clinic, Andheri west, Mumbai 400058

In my 3 decade long practise as a Child specialist doctor, one topic of discussion in every consultation of infants has always been that of Baby Massage. There are numerous concerns, myths, queries around this topic. Grandparents are always more confident around this topic and indeed of great help, though everyone is not lucky! At Smile Children Clinic, Andheri, Mumbai, as a Paediatrician, we always advise every parent ways to create a nurturing and stimulating strategies for growth and development of children. Baby massage is incredibly potent tool in this journey.

Role of touch in facilitating development of children

Touch is not merely a physical sensation! It's a fundamental to child's emotional, cognitive and physical growth. Right from the birth, babies rely on touch for comfort, security, and communication. It is scientifically proven that regular massage can have a profound impact on a child's growth & development. Touch to babies during holding, carrying, wearing and handling is much more important than keeping babies in portable carriers, bassinets, cribs, strollers, car seats and playpens.

Physical: Baby massage improves circulation, muscle tone, and digestion. It is proven to increase weight. Massage helps to soothe a baby with colic, teething discomfort and growing pains.

Emotional: The gentle touch and nurturing environment created during a massage can help reduce stress, anxiety, and crying in babies. It can also promote feelings of security, attachment, and well-being. Massage provides a dedicated time of parent for quiet connection, to focus solely on little one, listen to their cues, and respond to their needs with love and care. This strengthens the parent-child bond, creating a foundation of trust and security that will benefit the child throughout their life.

Cognitive: Baby massage stimulates the release of neurotransmitters like dopamine and serotonin, which play a crucial role in mood regulation and learning.

Advantage to mother: Mothers who massaged their babies feel more relaxed and bonded with their babies.

Things to remember

When?: Select a time when your baby is calm and relaxed, preferably after a bath or diaper change. Ideally Baby should be in ‘quiet alert state’ i. e. looking calm, gazing at caregiver, is happy, laying still, having open body posture and reaching out towards caregiver.

Where?: Dim the lights, put on some soothing music, and ensure the room is warm and comfortable.

How?: Use natural oils like coconut or almond oil, and apply gentle pressure.

Which areas?: Start with the legs and feet, gently moving upwards towards the back, chest, arms, and face (avoiding the eyes).

What to look for?: Pay attention to your baby's body language and facial expressions. If they seem uncomfortable, stop the massage and try again later.

How frequent?: Consistency is key. Aim for a few minutes of massage daily or a few times a week, depending on your baby's preference.

When to start?: Introducing touch to baby is important from birth itself, begin massage during the first few weeks after birth and then gradually develop a daily routine.

How massage helps baby?

Deep-touch pressure is the basic mechanism underlying benefit of massage to baby. Deep-touch pressure has a calming, organizing effect on the nervous system. Deep-touch pressure is nothing but applying firm, yet gentle and consistent pressure on baby's body. It will affect baby's breathing and heart rate through autonomic nervous system which actually controls breathing and heartbeat. But babies are known to respond differently to deep-touch pressure, hence  stop the massage if baby seems to have any discomfort.

6 massage strokes babies love…

  1. Back: during tummy time, from shoulders down to lower back and baby's bottom.

  2. Head: Cupping hands around head and stroking backwards with both hands over the crown of the head, followed by moving along the jawline and the chin, across the forehead and across the eyebrows and lastly tracing small circles on baby's cheeks and squeezing the chin.

  3. Feet: be firm as light touch can tickle the baby! Feet massage can be done while baby is feeding.

  4. Hands: this is particularly helpful to babied who keep their fists tightly closed.

  5. Shoulders: Moving hands firmly down the arms from the shoulder.

  6. Full body: whole body from top to toes in supine as well as prone position.

Which oil?

It is advisable to use oil as it facilitates movement of hand over baby's body. It is better to use natural vegetable oil like coconut. Non-medicated baby rubs can be used for babies age 3 months and older. But avoid using adult massage oils, hand lotion or nut-based oils. Avoid using scented oils like essential oils.

How do I massage an active baby?:

Keeping few toys just for massage, singing while massaging, massaging what is easy to reach, making massage more fun by pulling baby gently and playfully back, using music and nursery rhymes, looking for toddler’s most quiet and receptive time of day for the massage are few tips for massaging active moving child.

What not to do?:

Don’t instil oil in nose, ears, umbilicus or eyes of a baby. Don’t be overenthusiastic and use excessive pressure, we have seen fracture of collar bone by baby massage! Wrong oil can cause skin irritation or allergy. Few babies may get overstimulated and might cry more with massage.

Vaccination

Children Vaccination Clinic

Which children clinic should I choose for my child’s vaccination?

Any Paediatrician OR Child Specialist near me ? OR …

These questions often come to the minds of new parents. But the guidance on this topic is sparse. Let us further delve into this.

Immunisation of children for vaccine preventable diseases is of paramount importance for all the stakeholders. Many vaccines are, thankfully, available in Government facilities but if you decide to get your child’s vaccination done at private children clinic, give a thought …Ask following questions and try to decide based on the further information.

Are vaccines given daily?

Vaccination of child is a priority and if it is not available when parents are free and motivated for the same, it might at best delay or at worst leads to missed vaccine shots.

What are charges for vaccine?

Vaccines are a costly affair, given the number of vaccines available now. Many times parents are unnecessarily charged over and above vaccine cost.

Is Counselling for vaccines available?

There are various issues parents needs to know about vaccines- which disease it is for? How efficacious? Any side effects? How many doses needed? And many more. Paediatrician needs to invest his time and effort in that.

Is cold chain maintained for vaccines?

Maintaining proper temperature for vaccine is an important issue for preserving its effectiveness. From manufacturing to administration to a child, it is important at each stage. Vaccines are to be kept in various compartments of refrigerators as per the guidelines and temperature must be monitored with a temperature monitoring device attached to refrigerator.

Is there transparency for credibility of vaccine dose?

Vaccines must be checked for expiry dates, storage temperature etc. The label on vaccine containing all the details should be pasted from vaccine dose to patient’s vaccination record.

Other Desirable qualities?

Implementing infection prevention and control measures, post vaccination observation, record maintenance, parental reminders for next dose, screening for vaccine eligibility and contraindications are few desirable qualities to look for in children vaccination clinic.

We at Smile Children Clinic, Viral Apartment, Opp. Shoppers Stop, Andheri west, Mumbai are very meticulous and protocolised in all respects about Children vaccination program. Alarming Truths About Child Health: What Parents in Mumbai Need to Know?

Dr Narendra Rathi

MD, DNB, FIAP (Pediatrics)

Consultant Child Specialist

Smile Children Clinic, Andheri West, Mumbai

Being a Paediatrician in practice since last 34 years and an expert in the field of children health, I often encounter parental concerns about children well-being. At Smile Children Clinic, we are commonly asked about the obvious problems in kids, overlooking the less obvious and often undiagnosed issues children in Mumbai are facing. As parents, we strive to give our children the best possible start in life. But are we aware of the hidden threats impacting our children’s health and well-being? Here are some shocking truths you might not have known:

1. Unspoken Struggles: Did you know 1 in 5 children battle mental health issues? Yet, the topic remains largely undiscussed. If your child shows signs of anxiety, depression, or emotional changes, remember – time to talk! Seek guidance from experienced child specialists. Our experience at Smile Children Clinic in Andheri West, Mumbai has been really alarming, with more and more parents reporting such issues in their kids. Learn more about childhood mental health at https://main.mohfw.gov.in/sites/default/files/National%20Mental%20Health%20Survey%2C%202015-16%20-%20Prevalence%2C%20Pattern%20%26%20Outcomes_0.pdf

2. Hidden Hunger: As a practising Pediatrician, I have hardly seen frank malnutrition in children in last 20 years. But beyond visible malnutrition, many children have deficiency of essential micronutrients, hindering their growth and development. Ensure your child receives a balanced diet, rich in fruits, vegetables, and whole grains. Pediatric nutritionist at Smile Children Clinic in Andheri West, Mumbai helps you detect such deficiencies by clinical examination of the child and sometimes by various tests done on the child.  Read more about hidden hunger at the World Health Organization (WHO): https://www.unicef.org/rosa/media/1686/file/Hidden%20hunger%20in%20South%20Asia.pdf

3. Screens Stealing Smiles: Excessive screen time is linked to anxiety, depression, and sleep issues in children. Encourage outdoor play! Discover the benefits of outdoor play for children at https://www.healthychildren.org/English/family-life/power-of-play/Pages/the-power-of-play-how-fun-and-games-help-children-thrive.aspx. Studies show parks and green spaces boost children's brains, emotions, and activity levels. Find out more about the benefits of nature for children at the National Institute for Play: https://www.nifplay.org/.

4. Toxic Surprise: Air pollution and toxins lurk in our environment, harming children's development. Fight for cleaner air and safer spaces for your child. Support initiatives promoting environmental awareness in Andheri. Learn more about air pollution's impact on children at the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP): https://www.unep.org/resources/other-evaluation-reportsdocuments/childrens-rights-and-environment#:~:text=Air%20pollution%2C%20water%20pollution%20and,early%20mortality%20throughout%20their%20life.

5. Lifesaving Vaccinations: At our Well Child Clinic, we often experience that despite their proven effectiveness, vaccine misinformation persists. Don't let myths jeopardize your child's health! Schedule regular checkups with a Pediatrician in Andheri, to understand about regular and new vaccines available for your child. Common Misconceptions About Childhood Asthma

Dr Narendra Rathi, MD, DNB, FIAP

Senior Paediatrician

Smile Children Clinic, Andheri west, Mumbai 400058

Childhood asthma is a common condition that affects many children across the globe. It is more common in cities like Mumbai which has high level of air pollution. In our Paediatric practice over last 34 years, we see the prevalence of asthma in kids is steadily increasing. Unfortunately, there are several misconceptions about this condition that can lead to confusion and misunderstandings. In this article, we will debunk some of the most common misconceptions surrounding childhood asthma to provide clarity and understanding.

Myth 1: Childhood asthma only affects children who live in polluted areas

Contrary to popular belief, childhood asthma can affect children regardless of their location. While pollution can certainly exacerbate asthma symptoms, other factors such as genetics and exposure to allergens also play a significant role.

Myth 2: Anyway, Children will outgrow asthma as they get older!

It is a common misconception that childhood asthma disappears with age. However, asthma is a chronic condition that can persist into adulthood if not properly managed. Seeking guidance from a child specialist or Paediatrician at Smile Children clinic can help in managing asthma symptoms effectively.

Myth 3: Asthma medications are addictive and should be avoided

Some parents fear that giving asthma medications (specially inhalers) to their children will lead to dependency. However, asthma medications are essential for managing symptoms and preventing asthma attacks. Working closely with a Paediatrician at Smile Well child clinic can help parents understand the proper use of asthma medications.

Myth 4: Children with asthma should avoid physical activity

Another misconception is that children with asthma should avoid physical activity to prevent asthma attacks. In reality, regular exercise is important for children with asthma as it helps improve lung function. Paediatricians can provide guidance on safe physical activities for children with asthma.

Myth 5: Child will asthma always has wheeze and breathlessness

Many a times, child with asthma would have only cough and no wheezing or breathlessness at all. This is called as cough variant asthma.

Myth 6: oral medicines like tablets and syrups are better than inhalers

The amount of drug is much less in inhalers as compared to oral medicines and hence less side effects. Also, the drug is delivered only to a place where it is needed i.e. lungs. Oral medicines travel the whole body and carries risk to other organs too.

Myth 7: Somebody in family must have or had asthma

It is usually the case but it is not essential. Many a times someone in family might have repeated sneezing or eczema but not asthma. Sometimes no family member can have any of these and still a child can have asthma.

It is important to address common misconceptions about childhood asthma to ensure that children receive the necessary care and support to manage their condition effectively. Consulting a child specialist at Smile Children clinic can provide valuable information and guidance for parents of children with asthma. Let's work together to promote better understanding and care for children with asthma. Remember,

How can I Prevent Heat Illness in my Child?

Dr Narendra Rathi

MD, DNB (Paediatrics)

Consultant Paediatrician

Smile Children Clinic, Andheri, Mumbai

Summer brings sunshine, vacations, and outdoor fun. But for children, the scorching heat can pose a serious health threat. Their bodies are less efficient at regulating temperature, making them more susceptible to heat-related illnesses. As a child health expert, our top priority is keeping your little ones safe and healthy during the hot months. This article equips you with the knowledge and tools to prevent heat illness in children, ensuring a happy and healthy summer for the whole family.

Why Heat Illness happen in Children?

Heat illness occurs when the body overheats and can't cool down on its own. Unlike adults, children have a smaller body mass and sweat less efficiently. This makes it harder for them to lose heat from body, leading to a rapid rise in body temperature.

There are many types of heat illness:

· Heat Rash: The mildest form, characterized by red, itchy bumps on the skin, typically appearing on the neck, chest, and inner thighs (Milia)

· Dehydration: This is more likely to happen in hot weather as body loses water by sweating and also the requirement of water is more.

· Heat exhaustion: sweating, cold, pale, and clammy skin, nausea or vomiting, tiredness or weakness, dizziness, irritability are seen in a child with heat exhaustion.

· Heat Cramps: These are painful muscle cramps usually affecting the legs and arms. They can occur during or after the activity in hot weather.

· Heatstroke: The most serious heat illness, heatstroke is a medical emergency. It involves a high body temperature (often above 104°F), confusion, dizziness, vomiting, and sometimes seizures/fits.

So, how do I prevent all these?

The good news is that most heat-related illnesses are preventable with simple strategies. Here's what you can do to keep your child cool and safe:

Hydration is Crucial:

· Offer fluids frequently: Don't wait until your child feels thirsty. Encourage regular sips of water or a sugar-free electrolyte drink throughout the day, even if they're not actively playing.

· Make it fun: Use colourful cups with straws, ice pops, or frozen fruit chunks to make water intake more appealing.

· Limit sugary drinks: Sugary drinks can dehydrate your child further. Avoid sodas, fruit juices, and sports drinks unless they're heavily diluted with water.

Dress for the Weather:

· Light and loose clothing: Choose breathable fabrics like cotton in light colours. Avoid tight-fitting clothes or dark colours that absorb heat.

· Sun protection: Don't forget a wide-brimmed hat or cap and sunglasses. Apply sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher to exposed skin 15 minutes before going outdoors and reapply every two to four hours, or more often if sweating.

Schedule Outdoor Activity Wisely:

· Plan for cooler times: Avoid the peak heat of the day, typically between 10 am and 5 pm. Opt for early morning or evening outings when the sun's intensity is lower.

· Seek shade: Whenever possible, stay in shady areas like under trees or umbrellas.

· Plan breaks: Schedule frequent breaks in air-conditioned spaces or cool, shaded areas. Let your child rest and rehydrate during these breaks.

Create a Cool Environment at Home:

· Air conditioning: If you have air conditioning, use it to maintain a comfortable indoor temperature.

· Cooling alternatives: If you don't have air conditioning, utilize fans, cool baths, or damp washcloths to cool your child down.

Additional Tips:

· Never leave a child unattended in a car: Even with cracked windows, car temperatures can rise very quickly, leading to heatstroke within minutes.

· Be aware of medications: Some medications can increase heat sensitivity. Talk to your Paediatrician if you're concerned about your child's medications affecting them in hot weather.

· Lead by example: Let your children see you practicing good hydration and heat-protective behaviours.

Recognizing the Signs of Heat Illness:

Knowing the above signs of heat illness can help you intervene early and prevent a more serious situation.

What to Do if Your Child Shows Signs of Heat Illness:

· Move them to a cool environment: Get them out of the heat and into an air-conditioned space or shady area.

· Remove excess clothing: Loosen or remove any unnecessary clothing.

· Cool them down: Give them cool fluids to drink and apply cool, damp cloths to their forehead and neck. Consider a cool bath or shower if they're alert enough.

· Monitor their condition: Closely monitor your child's temperature and symptoms. If they are vomiting or not improving, or if you suspect heatstroke

· Rush to your Child Specialist doctor or nearest paediatric hospital immediately: Expert Child Specialist at Smile Children Clinic are well experienced in dealing with heat illnesses in children & adolescents. Please call on 9226893706 to book an appointment for any issue related to Child and Adolescent health.

HOW MUCH FOOD SHOULD I SERVE MY 3 YEAR OLD AT EACH MEALTIME

A guide to toddler serving sizes…

Dr. Narendra Rathi

MD, DNB

Senior Pediatrician,

Smile Children Clinic, Andheri west, Mumbai.

Hello, mamas and papas of parents in Andheri! Ever wonder if your little one is getting the right amount of food for their daily adventures? Between park trips, play sessions, sandcastle building, and those oh-so-important dance parties, figuring out how much to serve your toddler can feel like a tricky balancing act. By the way, this is one of the commonest question we face at our Smile Children Clinic in Andheri west, Mumbai. Worry not, fellow parents! Today, we're diving into the world of toddler serving sizes with some helpful tips and tricks, all inspired by the trusted guidance of the nutrition science in children (https://www.healthychildren.org/English/Pages/default.aspx) .

Remember, every tiny tot is unique. What works for one might not be ideal for another. But don’t worry, this advice is your friendly neighborhood compass, pointing you in the right direction. So, grab your favorite sippy cup (toddlers love those!), and let's get started!

The magic formula: Tiny tummies, tiny portions

First things first, let's not use the adult-sized plates. A toddler's tummy is much smaller, so their portions need to be smaller too. Think one-quarter of an adult serving as a general rule of thumb. This might seem small, but trust us, their little bodies are super-efficient at using those nutrients!

Building a balanced bite:

Now, onto the fun part – filling those tiny plates with goodness! Imagine a colorful rainbow on your child's plate, representing the different food groups:

  • Fruits and veggies: Aim for 1-2 tablespoons each. Think bite-sized apple slices, steamed broccoli florets, or a handful of cherry tomatoes. Remember, variety is the key!

  • Grains: Think 1-4 slices of whole grain chapatis or parathas, a small scoop of khichadi, or some dal rice. Whole grains provide fiber and energy, keeping those toddlers running.

  • Protein: 1-2 ounces is enough. Offer grilled chicken strips, scrambled eggs, thick dal, or paneer or some crushed groundnuts recipe (Remember it is not essential to eat nonveg to satisfy protein requirements!). Protein helps build strong muscles and bones.

  • Dairy: 4-6 ounces is perfect. Offer milk, yogurt, paneer or cheese. Dairy provides calcium for healthy bones and teeth.

Remember: These are just starting points! Adjust portions based on your child's appetite, activity level, and growth.

Bonus tip: Let your little one be the guide! Offer smaller portions and allow them to ask for more if they're still hungry. This helps them develop healthy eating habits and trust their body's signals.

More tips for picky eaters (we've all experienced that!):

  • Get creative! Cut food into fun shapes, use colorful plates, and involve your child in shopping to meal prep.

  • Offer choices. Let them pick between two healthy options, giving them a sense of control.

  • Don't force it. If they refuse a food, offer it again another time. Consistency is key!

  • Lead by example. Make healthy choices yourself, and your little one will likely follow suit.

And when in doubt, seek expert advice!

The most trusted and expert children's clinic in Andheri, Mumbai can offer invaluable guidance. Consider consulting a pediatrician at Smile Well Child Clinic at Andheri West, Mumbai, known for their expertise in child nutrition and development. They can tailor recommendations specific to your child's needs and address any concerns you might have.

Remember, mamas and papas, you're doing a great job! Raising healthy, happy toddlers is a journey, and this piece of suggestion is just a helpful map along the way. You are not alone, remember the saying “Pediatricians eat because children don’t”!

Enjoy the process, celebrate the little victories (like finishing a whole plate of veggies!), and trust your instincts. With a little love, patience, and the right guidance, your little explorer will be fueled for all their adventures to come!

The Science and Art of Swaddling: A Guide for Parents

Dr. Narendra Rathi

MD, DNB

Senior Pediatrician,

Smile Children Clinic, Andheri west, Mumbai.

The world of new-borns are both fun filled and overwhelming for new parents. As you go through the intricacies of caring for your  bundle of joy, you'll encounter a variety of practices and techniques, one of which is swaddling. But what exactly is swaddling, and let us see if it is truly beneficial for your baby?

Swaddling is a Traditional Technique with Modern Benefits

Swaddling is the practice of wrapping a baby snugly in a thin cloth, mimicking the feeling of being secure and enclosed in the womb. This age-old practice has been around for centuries, and recent research suggests it has a multiple benefits for babies:

Better Sleep: Science have shown that swaddling can promote longer and deeper sleep for babies. Swaddled babies slept for an average of 45 minutes longer than un-swaddled babies. This can be a super helpful for sleep-deprived parents!

Higher Comfort: The gentle pressure from swaddling can mimic the feeling of being held, which can help soothe and calm fussy babies. This can be especially helpful for babies experiencing discomfort from gas or colic.

Reduced Startle Reflex: Newborns have a strong startle reflex, which can wake them up frequently. Swaddling can help to suppress this reflex, leading to more peaceful sleep.

Potential for Lower Risk of SIDS: Some studies suggest that swaddling may be associated with a lower risk of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS). However, it's crucial to remember that safe sleep practices like placing your baby on their back on a firm mattress are still essential for reducing the risk of SIDS. But remember not to swaddle a baby after 2 months of age.

Swaddling isn't just about practical benefits; it can also be a beautiful way to bond with your baby. The act of carefully swaddling your baby can create a calming and intimate experience, with better sense of connection and security.

Is Swaddling Right for Your Baby?

While swaddling generally safe for most healthy babies, it's not a one-size-fits-all approach. Here are some things to consider:

Your baby's temperament: Some babies naturally startle more easily and may benefit more from swaddling than others.

Your baby's age: Swaddling is generally recommended for new-borns up to 2 months old. As babies get older and start to roll over, swaddling can become unsafe and should be discontinued.

Your baby's comfort: Always pay attention to your baby's cues. If they seem uncomfortable or struggle to breathe, loosen the swaddle or stop swaddling altogether.

Safety Tips: Every Parent should know

Ensuring your baby's safety is paramount. Here are some safe swaddling tips to follow:

Use a lightweight, breathable fabric: Avoid using thick blankets that could overheat your baby.

Leave enough hip room: The swaddle should be snug but not constricting around your baby's hips. This is crucial to prevent hip dysplasia, a developmental condition affecting the hip joint.

Ensure proper arm placement: Keep your baby's arms in a natural position, either inside the swaddle or with their arms out (also known as "arms-out swaddling").

Never swaddle too tightly: The swaddle should be snug but still allow your baby to breathe comfortably.

Always place your baby on their back to sleep: This is the single most important factor for reducing the risk of SIDS, regardless of whether your baby is swaddled or not.

Remember, you are not alone!

If you have any questions or concerns about swaddling your baby, don't hesitate to consult your pediatrician. They can provide personalized guidance and ensure safe swaddling practices for your little one.

Developmental Behavioral Child Health

Dr Narendra Rathi

MD, DNB, FIAP (Pediatrics)

Smile Children Clinic, Andheri, Mumbai

This year, I have completed 35 years of my practice as a child specialist and I have realised time and again that this dimension of Paediatrics is a commonly overlooked, misguided and trivialized. We need to have more Child Health experts and many more institutions to look after Developmental Behavioural child health.

Children with Neurodevelopmental disorders or children with special needs or neurodiverse kids should be cared for in more proactive manner. Neurodiversity is a natural variation in human brain. Brain can work perfectly in some areas but may be challenging in others. ADHD, Dyslexia, Autism etc are included in umbrella term of Neurodiversity.

Neurodiversity is a concept to be disseminated and accepted to become a more inclusive society.
Let “Neurotypicals” train & sensitize themselves to recognize the positive attributes in Neurodivergent. This surely will make huge difference in the medical as well as social dimension of Neurodiversity. Recognize that they are essentially different, not necessarily flawed !
The fact remains, however much the society wants to pretend otherwise, that society is sceptical of the performance of Neurodivergent world in almost every sphere of life. But, contrary to this widespread belief, neurodivergent can have unmatched & incredible positive attributes in varying permutations and combinations: like laser sharp focus, reduced ambient distractions, unmatched resilience, empathy, artwork & creativity and emotional genuineness. They have incredibly consistency, trustworthiness & honesty in the trained routines. Families of Neurodivergent become caring, sensitive, empathetic & tolerant. Recognizing, harnessing and capitalizing on the abilities of the disabled is a game changer in improving their QoL and guarantees the productivity for the nation as a whole, given the sheer prevalence of Neurodiversity.

Neurodisparity means inequitable access to and utilization of healthcare services in neurological diseases. And this neurodisparity is most prominent for neurodivergent. This poor access to healthcare has humongous detrimental impact on individual, societal and national level. Disproportionately lesser number of healthcare professionals working for Children with Special needs, dismal awareness of neurodivergent conditions and therapeutics thereof, insufficient number of Child Development Canters and most of them working in silos are some of the factors responsible for this inequity. This disparity becomes all the more pronounced when we move from urban to rural, affluent to resource poor and from well-educated to illiterate. All the stakeholders need to recognize and respond promptly to this disparity to
maximize the potential of neurodivergent. There are many possible interventions to address these health disparities. Unprecedented collaboration, planning and execution is needed for bridging the gap in access to healthcare for neurodivergent population.

Let there be paradigm shift in our perspective of looking at neurodivergent- “deficit based” to “strength based”. Let us focus not only on rehabilitation of deficits, but on the growth and meaningful living based on positive attributes in a given child. Then the most important question remains- what are the various strategies to identify abilities in disabled?

Differences in brains of Children should not be viewed as deficits or abnormalities or disabilities or sicknesses or defects or diseases. Since Sociologist Judy Singer coined this word Neurodiversity (ND) in 1998, it hasn’t still found a place in medical terminologies! Everyone deserves respectful language and so do children and adults with Neurodiversity. Embracing ND in true spirits is essential in educational and healthcare institutions.
It is important for everyone to realise that some of these ND individuals can have exceptional skills in pattern recognition, memory, and mathematics. Harvard Business Review has quoted that many MNCs had productivity gains, quality improvement, boosts in innovative capabilities, and increased employee engagement by hiring ND individuals.

Do you agree that all stakeholders need to enter into ‘mission mode’ from ‘spectator mode’?
Let us strive to imbibe these essential elements of early intervention for Children with Special needs: cross disability, parent centric, preparatory school & social model of disability, into the psyche of all stakeholders! Policymakers (formulating national program & standard guidelines for providing services to such children), administrators (registering & monitoring the standardization of centres providing such services), Educational institutions (addressing short supply of rehab professionals), Providers (rehab professionals getting the requisite training and working as per laid down guidelines), families with such children (rising for their own right to get care). Only changing the label: from CwD (children with disabilities) to differently abled children to children with special needs to neurodivergent children will not lead to measurable impact. And let us not forget that our ultimate goal is inclusive education and mainstreaming of such children. Let all of us join hands to stop discrimination against neurodivergent children and make inclusive society.

Article 15 of the Constitution of India forbids discrimination on grounds only of religion, race, caste, gender, or place of birth. This list needs expansion and neurodiversity being the prominent contender here. Let us not trivialize the inherent power of words and this power can harm or benefit. Some medical terminologies, due to their negative connotation, have power to harm.

Article 15, in Clauses (3-6), allows for positive discrimination in favour of disadvantaged groups. Wrong labels are disgraceful and have huge negative impact. Let us substitute those terms with positive once, though less “medically sounding “. At our centre, we have substituted ‘special needs child’ with a ‘neurodivergent’ child, ‘hyperactive’ with ‘Energetic’, ‘distracted’ with ‘fascinated’, ‘impulsive’ with ‘extempore’, ‘disruptive’ with ‘experimental’, and ‘inattentive’ with ‘diversely interested’. This turned out to be so incredibly helpful, not only for children and their parents, but to our pleasant surprise, also to therapists! Hence don’t forget to remember that optimism in the minds of parents and therapists is of utmost importance.

Early intervention centre should be catering to all disabilities (cross disability), should provide for capacity building of parents (parent centric), should understand a social model of disability rather than just a medical model, should be conversant with habilitation & rehabilitation, comprehensive with all services under one roof and should have preparatory school.

Flu or common cold?

MD, DNB,
Consultant Pediatrician
Smile Children Clinic
Andheri, Mumbai

In my last 3 decades of practice as a Children Specialist doctor, one area where parents ( and sometimes doctors too !  ) struggled  is to understand that common cold and flu are two different diseases. I understand, they have many things in common and may look similar to each other but they are two distinct illnesses. These are essentially caused by different germs (viruses), they look different in children, one of them has far more potential to become a serious health issue, and most importantly, one of them is easily preventable by vaccine.
Today, we will see how parents should differentiate between common cold and flu and why should parents differentiate in the first place!
Although both are viral diseases (meaning antibiotics will not help in both of these). Common cold is caused by different viruses than flu, namely Rhinoviruses, Parainfluenza viruses and seasonal coronaviruses. These coronaviruses are not the ones which cause Covid 19, which is caused by SARS-CoV-2. The viruses causing flu are different, these are called Influenza viruses and has many types.
Both of these spread by respiratory droplets during sneezing, coughing, talking etc and also through contaminated surfaces. Hence it is important to take precautions like covering nose and mouth and frequently washing hands.

The flu typically comes on fast and furious, with a fever, chills, muscle aches, and a cough that just won't quit. So flu begins much more abruptly than common cold which comes a bit slowly. Flu symptoms are far more severe as compared to common cold so more of headache, body pains and chills in flu than common cold. One thing to differentiate between the two: common cold has more symptoms related to nose and throat : more of stuffy nose or running nose or sneezing or sore throat in common cold than flu. You can compare flu to a puppy which got hit by a truck, and all they'll want to do is cuddle up in bed, whimpering like a sad puppy !
Children with common cold will not be feeling their best, but they'll probably still have enough energy to cause a little chaos around the house!
So why exactly does it matter if it's the flu or a cold? Well, the flu can be way more serious. It can lead to complications like pneumonia, especially in younger kids (and grandparents!). Sometimes there are superadded bacterial infections which might need antibiotics. Rarely flu may lead to admission to hospital which is never a case in common cold. Luckily , flu has Antiviral treatment available which your child specialist doctor will decide whether to use or not. And these are precisely the reasons why one must separate them out so you and we can be little more careful in flu.
Here's the golden rule: If your child seems sick and miserable, with a fever and chills, it's best to call the pediatrician. They can help you figure out if it's the flu and recommend the best course of treatment.
Apart from the measures described above for stay away from these viral infections, there is simple flu shots (Flu Vaccine) for preventing flu. Flu vaccine needs two doses the first time and then a single yearly dose. The flu vaccine is your best weapon!  It's like a superhero suit that helps child's body fight off the flu.  And remember you too need flu shot - yes parents and grandparents too!
By knowing the difference between the flu and a cold, and taking steps to prevent them, you can help your child stay healthy and happy all season long.

What parents should know about Monkeypox?

Dr. Narendra Rathi

MD, DNB (Pediatrics)

Smile Children Clinic,

Andheri, Mumbai

Being a practicing pediatrician, every day, I am asked by parents if they should worry about Monkeypox, given the news and media flooded with it! I tell them that rather than worry, they should be aware of this disease and be prepared in case it strikes at large. Here we will talk about few things parents are asking us and should know about Monkeypox.

Is it real?

Yes, Monkeypox is the disease the world is experiencing now. Though it hasn’t yet spread too much, but it can happen anytime in future. The threat is real. WHO as declared it as a medical emergency of international concern. As children are likely to have more serious disease, being a Child Specialist, I should create the scientific awareness of this disease among parents.

Is Monkeypox there in India?

Yes, the first case of Monkeypox in India occurred on 14/07/2022 (https://ihpoe.mohfw.gov.in/RTI/Monkeypox%20Guidelines.pdf ).

Will Monkeypox affect children?

Yes, it can. And if it does, as said earlier, it is likely to be more serious in children (and also in pregnant women & people with low immunity) https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/35947269/.

How does it look like when a person gets it?

Monkeypox comes with fever, glands and rash. Initially, there is fever and glands in armpit, groin, neck or near ears. The rash is painful, fluid filled blisters and can last for around 15-20 days.

Will I miss it for chickenpox?

Yes, sometimes. Fever, rash with fluid filled blisters is all similar to chickenpox. But rash in monkeypox is bigger and painful, while chickenpox rash is itchy. Also, the rash of monkeypox lasts longer. The glands are not there in chickenpox. Essentially both are diseases caused by viruses but the viruses are different.

Is Monkeypox ever dangerous for life?

Yes, sometimes it can be. Sometimes there are complications like pneumonia, sepsis, bacterial infection, brain swelling or eye damage.

How will my pediatrician confirm it?

There are specific tests to diagnose Monkeypox like PCR test and antibody tests. These are done on Skin scrapings, blister fluid, blood, urine or throat swab.

How is monkeypox treated?

The treatment is just taking care of symptoms child is experiencing like paracetamol for fever. Specific medicine which acts against Monkeypox virus is available but rarely needed, mostly for children with severe disease specially in those who have very low immunity.

What can I do to protect my child from Monkeypox?

At present no vaccine is available for prevention of Monkeypox. One has to take all precautions to prevent child getting infection from a patient having this disease. Though it usually is transmitted from other person, rarely one can contract this disease from animal bite or scratch or meat consumption, specially from rats, squirrel or monkeys. So, avoid close contact with people who are sick with monkeypox, wash hands frequently with soap and water and avoid contact with animals that may be infected with monkeypox.

Adolescent Mental Health in Mumbai

I am Dr. Narendra Rathi, a senior pediatrician in Andheri, Mumbai. Today, I wish to share my experience about a topic which is really important for all of us: teenager’s mental health. In last few years, I am seeing more & more cases of teenagers with mental health issues and I have realised that parents and adolescents need more scientific knowledge from a credible source regarding this topic. The world is going through a time of tremendous change, and so are bodies of adolescents! And, I want you all to realise that it's normal for teenagers to experience ups and downs, every now & then. But how can you tell if your teen is struggling more than just the usual? Here in Mumbai, where academic, social, financial and commuting pressures are particularly high, it has become important as a parent and as an adolescent himself/herself to be aware of the tipping point.

What is the first thing to do?

The first & the most important thing we can do is to talk about it, with doctors, with teenagers, with parents, in schools & colleges, in social functions and at any place one feels appropriate. It is a real problem, don’t shy away, don’t make it taboo! Create a safe space & time where we feel comfortable opening up about what's going on in the lives of our teenagers. This doesn't have to be a big, dramatic event. Try chatting with each other while you're making dinner or folding laundry or in parent meet or during doctor consultation.

Don’t force, nag, cajole…

Pay attention to subtle cues – if she sees withdrawn or reluctant to talk at present, don't push it. Just let her know you're there whenever she is ready. I have seen this common mistake repeatedly done by overtly ambitious parents: once they are concerned about any issue of their children, they just can’t wait to act!

What Do I Watch Out For?

Most important for parents is to be aware of and subtly observing their teenagers for signals that might indicate that he/she is going through something one needs to take cognisance of, like…

  • Changes in mood or behavior: suddenly withdrawn or irritable teenager Or  Unexplained changes in sleeping or eating patterns

  • Difficulty concentrating on everyday tasks or schoolwork

  • Loss of interest in activities one used to enjoy previously

  • Feeling hopeless or worthless

  • Talking about suicide or self-harm

I insist here that if you see any of these signs, don't panic. It's important to take action, but remember, you're not alone. There are many resources available to help you and your loved one.

Which are Common issues in Teens?

Here are some of the most common mental health conditions that affect teenagers:

  • Anxiety: This is a feeling of excessive & persistent worry, nervousness, or unease, when actually, thinking rationally, there is no reason to feel that way. It's normal to feel anxious sometimes, but when anxiety starts to interfere with your daily life, it can be a problem.

  • Depression: This is a feeling of sadness or hopelessness that lasts for more than two weeks. Teens with depression may lose interest in activities they used to enjoy, have trouble sleeping or eating, and have difficulty concentrating.

  • Eating disorders: These are unhealthy eating habits that can be dangerous. Anorexia nervosa is an eating disorder in which teens restrict their food intake and become very thin. Bulimia nervosa is an eating disorder in which teens binge eat and then purge the food by vomiting or laxatives.

  • Substance abuse: This is the misuse of drugs or alcohol. Teens who abuse substances may use them to cope with difficult emotions or to fit in with a certain group.

How can we as Pediatricians Help?

Do you wonder Pediatricians or child specialist doctors are only for babies and young children? Don’t worry, this is a common myth! Like I see patients from birth to 21 years of age. Adolescent science is actually a part of Pediatrics. We at Smile Children Clinic, Andheri west, Mumbai are helping teens throughout their adolescence, not only regarding physical health but also for mental health. We offer screening for mental health conditions, provide counseling, and have in house support for therapy and treatment by trained Psychologists, developmental behavioural pediatrician and child & adolescent Psychiatrists.

Smile Children Clinic, Andheri, Mumbai

As a pediatrician & Child Health Expert since 1989, we are catering to to the unique challenges that teens face. Most often, it is our experience that adolescents face combination of physical and mental health issues say like migraine with depression, anxiety with iron deficiency etc. The pressure to succeed academically and socially is really intense, and this can take a toll on mental health. If you're concerned about your teen's health, please don't hesitate to reach out. Multidisciplinary team is available, including me and my colleagues. We're here to help you and your teen get through this.

I Emphasise, at the cost of repetition…

  • You are not alone. There are many resources available to help you and your teen.

  • It's important to have conversations with your teen about how they feel.

Early intervention is the key. The sooner you get help for your teen, the better the outcome will be.
